A nivel fisiológico , la vida en las fosas abisales requiere adaptaciones moleculares complejas . Los peces abisales ( como el pez dragón o el pez linterna ) carecen por completo de natatorias ( bolsas de aire que usan otros peces para flotar ) , ya que la las haría colapsar . En su lugar , sus cuerpos están compuestos por tejidos ricos en agua y grasas no compresibles . Además , sus membranas celulares contienen altos niveles de ácidos grasos que mantienen la celular bajo el frío extremo ( cercano a los 1 °C ) , y poseen una llamada óxido de trimetilamina ( ) , que estabiliza las e impide que las células se deformen o aplasten .
