การบาดเจ็บทุติยภูมิ (Secondary Injury) คือการบาดเจ็บที่เกิดขึ้นทันทีจากแรงกระทำเชิงกลศาสตร์ ทำให้เซลล์ประสาทและหลอดเลือดฝอยแตกออก

ตามเกณฑ์ ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) ผู้ป่วยที่ถูกจำแนกอยู่ในระดับ B (Sensory Incomplete) หมายถึง ผู้ป่วยยังมีความรู้สึกหลงเหลืออยู่ใต้ระดับบาดเจ็บรวมถึงระดับ S4-S5 แต่ไม่มีการสั่งการของกล้ามเนื้อ

ผู้ป่วยที่มีการบาดเจ็บไขสันหลังในระดับคอช่วงบน โดยเฉพาะระดับ C1–C4 มีความเสี่ยงสูงต่อภาวะหายใจล้มเหลวและจำเป็นต้องพึ่งพาเครื่องช่วยหายใจ

ในระยะเฉียบพลันของการดูแลผู้ป่วยบาดเจ็บไขสันหลัง พยาบาลควรควบคุมดูแลให้ผู้ป่วยมีค่าความดันโลหิตแดงเฉลี่ย (MAP) อยู่ในช่วง 60–65 mmHg เพื่อป้องกันภาวะไขสันหลังขาดเลือด

สำหรับผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับการตัดขาระดับใต้เข่า (BK Amputation) การใช้หมอนหนุนรองใต้ตอขาควรทำเฉพาะใน 24 ชั่วโมงแรกหลังผ่าตัดเท่านั้น และต้องเอาออกหลังจากนั้นเพื่อป้องกันข้อยึดติดงอ

Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) คือ ความเจ็บปวดที่เกิดขึ้นในอวัยวะส่วนที่ถูกตัดออกไปแล้ว ผู้ป่วยจะรู้สึกปวดแสบ ปวดร้อน ปวดบีบ หรือปวดคล้ายไฟช็อต แม้อวัยวะนั้นจะไม่มีอยู่จริงซึ่งเป็นการจินตนาการของผู้ป่วย
