En , - Fabri de Peiresc descubrió la Nebulosa de Orión utilizando un telescopio . En 1715 , publicó una lista de seis nebulosas y , años después , Charles Messier recopiló un catálogo de nebulosas .

En , William Huggins estudió los espectros de unas 70 nebulosas y descubrió que muchas estaban formadas por gas . En 1912 , demostró que la nebulosa que rodea a la estrella Merope refleja la luz estelar .

Finalmente , en 1923 , tras el Great Debate , se confirmó que muchas de las llamadas nebulosas eran en realidad alejadas de la Vía Láctea . Además , concluyó que casi todas las nebulosas están asociadas con estrellas .
