Dolly the sheep was the first mammal in the world to be from an adult cell . She was born on 5 July 1996 in Scotland and was the famous country singer Dolly Parton .

Dolly was created by scientists at the Roslin Institute . They wanted to learn more about and find ways to improve farm animals .

To create Dolly , scientists took the nucleus from a in the mammary gland of a Finn Dorset sheep . They placed it into an empty egg cell from a Scottish Blackface sheep . After the developed in a laboratory for six days , it was placed inside a surrogate mother . Several months later , Dolly was born healthy .

The news of Dolly's birth was announced in 1997 . It quickly became an story . While many people were about this scientific success , others were about the ethics of cloning . They wondered if cloning animals , or even humans , was the right thing to do .

In 2003 , she became seriously ill with a disease that could not be cured . To prevent her from suffering , she was when she was six years old .

Dolly's on science has been enormous . Her story changed scientists' understanding of biology and opened new possibilities for research in genetics , medicine , and animal breeding . Today , Dolly is at the National Museum of Scotland , where visitors can learn about her remarkable contribution to science .
