In 18th Century, British army officers stationed in , Pune, India,
had been reported to be playing a competitive version of the game
called “Poona”. And when the army was called back in 1860s, they
brought back the Indian version of the game to England.
As early as 1860, Isaac Spratt, a London toy dealer, published a
booklet, Badminton Battledore - a new game, but unfortunately no
copy has survived. That it makes into an upper-class amusement.
The new sport was definitively launched in 1873 at the Badminton
House, Gloucestershire, owned by the Duke of Beaufort. During that
time, the game was referred to as "The Game of Badminton," and the
game's official name became Badminton.
In 1893, the first official badminton rules were published in England,

Badminton was first contested as an official Olympic sport at the
1992 Olympic games in Barcelona, Spain.
In 1936, India joined as an affiliate. The Badminton World Federation (BWF)
now governs international badminton and develops the sport globally.
Major international tournaments like the Thomas Cup which is for men, and
the Uber Cup for which is for women started to be held
