Proses pengkatalogan bermula dengan sumber maklumat oleh pustakawan . Langkah seterusnya ialah penentuan , pengkatalogan berasaskan standard , penggunaan bantuan rujukan , penyusunan entri menurut sistem klasifikasi , dan penyiaran dalam katalog . Pengkelasan subject , penentuan , tarikh terbit , dan nombor juga perlu direkod . Pustakawan perlu memastikan konsistensi format , pengekodan bahasa , serta kemas kini rekod apabila bahan baru ditemui . Penggunaan bahasa universal membantu pengguna mencari bahan dengan lebih efisyen .
