The first city bus service , which was established in Nantes , France in 1828 , was a great innovation . For the first time , a large public vehicle moved along the streets , picking up passengers and dropping them off at stops . Easier than walking and cheaper than a private carriage , these horse - drawn buses soon , and the idea spread to other cities and countries . Of course , a lot has changed since then , aside from replacing horses with motors . The experience of riding has been by features such as comfortable seats , air conditioning and a ban on smoking . Special lanes that buses can avoid traffic jams . Passengers are able to easily find the best to take by using technology on their phones , and they always know how long they'll have to wait thanks to at the bus stops . With all these developments , it that 200 years after it began , the city bus remains one of the world's most popular transport .
