Traditional practice Payment to the Earth : An ancestral Inca ceremony performed before anyone climbs the glaciated peaks of the park . Local Quechua communities and mountain guides leave offerings of coca leaves , chicha ( corn beer ) , and sweets to ask the ( Mother Earth ) and the ( sacred mountain spirits ) for permission and safety . The legend of and explains the origin of the park's two highest peaks . Their tears created the turquoise lakes , like , and inspired the region's textile and heritage .
