by Fatimah
1

Invention of totally new terms, often trade names (e.g., aspirin, pepsi). Includes Eponyms (words based on person/place names like fahrenheit, watt).

2

Taking words from other languages. A Calque (loan translation) is a literal item-by-item translation into the borrowing language (e.g., Flea market from French marché aux puces).

3

Joining two separate full words to make a single form (e.g., textbook, wallpaper).

4

Combining the beginning of one word with the end of another (e.g., smog = smoke + fog; brunch = breakfast + lunch).

5

Reducing a polysyllabic word to a shorter form (e.g., math from mathematics, exam from examination). Includes Hypocorisms (reducing to one syllable and adding -y or -ie, favored in British/Australian English like movie, brekky).

6

Reducing a word of one type (noun) to form another type (verb) (e.g., televise from television).

7

Changing a word's grammatical function without modifying its form.

8

New words formed from initial letters of a set of words (e.g., NASA, CD).

9

Forming new words by adding Affixes (prefixes like dis-, anti-; suffixes like -less, -ful; or infixes like Singa-bloody-pore).
