La evaluación sumativa tiene como uno de sus propósitos acreditar y certificar el nivel de conocimientos alcanzado por las y los estudiantes al concluir un periodo de evaluación.

La evaluación sumativa únicamente utiliza exámenes escritos y sin considerar los instrumentos como el portafolio de evidencias, la autoevaluación o la coevaluación.

La evaluación sumativa se realiza al finalizar un periodo, ciclo o unidad de aprendizaje para conocer el nivel de logro alcanzado por los estudiantes y asignar una calificación.

La heteroevaluación, la autoevaluación, la coevaluación y el portafolio de evidencias son estrategias e instrumentos que pueden formar parte de la evaluación sumativa.

La evaluación sumativa considera factores como el contexto, el estado físico, emocional o psicológico del estudiante al interpretar los resultados.

La evaluación sumativa se realiza de manera continua durante todo el proceso de enseñanza para ajustar la planeación didáctica del docente.
