Modal verbs express possibility , ability , permission , or obligation in English . Students often choose to indicate ability , as in I can swim . For polite requests , is common , or for formal permission . When giving advice , guides you to a recommended action , while shows strong obligation . We use might to suggest a weaker possibility . Remember that and talk about future actions , with will used for promises and would for hypothetical situations .
