Los obtienen esa energía al alimentarse de otros seres vivos , mientras los devuelven nutrientes al suelo al descomponer materia orgánica . La asegura la estabilidad ante cambios y ayuda a mantener las funciones ecológicas . En una cadena trófica , la energía fluye de los productores hacia los diferentes niveles de consumidores .
