在很久很久以前，有一隻怪物叫做「年獸」。牠常常跑到人們住的村子偷吃食物，破壞農地。 有一次，當牠又準備做壞事的時候，忽然被一戶人家門口的紅色衣服嚇到，接著又看到火光和「劈哩啪啦」的聲音，牠嚇得立刻跑走了。 於是，人們知道：「年獸」怕紅色、怕火光，也怕吵。所以，每到過年的時候，人們就在門上貼紅紙，在家門口放鞭炮。 後來，「年獸」不敢再來做壞事了。人們嚇走了「年獸」，於是敲鑼打鼓，互相說「恭喜」，這就是華人傳說「過年」的由來。
