Understanding when to use the or the can be tricky for learners . certain verbs , we choose the gerund , as in after enjoying something : She enjoys . After other verbs , we use the infinitive , for example : She plans to next summer . Some pairs are clear : smoking versus stop to smoke , where meaning changes . Other verbs allow either form with little difference , such as begin doing or begin to do , and start to / doing . Remember that the infinitive is formed with to + base verb , while the gerund ends in - ing .
