Nelson Mandela born on July 18 , 1918 , in Mvezo , South Africa . His birth name Rolihlahla Mandela , and his family part of the Thembu royal family .

He raised in Qunu . His father a local chief who when Mandela about nine years old . Afterward , Mandela cared for by the Thembu king and learned about African history and traditions .

Mandela educated at Methodist schools , Clarkebury Boarding Institute , and Healdtown . In 1939 , he a student at the University of Fort Hare , where he English , anthropology , politics , and Roman - Dutch law .

After he the university because of a student protest , he to Johannesburg in 1941 . He studied law and one of the first Black lawyers in South Africa .
