Hace alrededor de 4500 años , los mayas se instalaron en una zona selvática del actual territorio de . Se expandieron luego hacia los territorios actuales de Belice , el sur de México , oeste de Honduras y El Salvador , en América Central .
Fueron los primeros pueblos de América . maíz , porotos , mandioca , batata , cacao y algodón . Crearon un técnica ( que aún se practica ) llamada agricultura itinerante que les permitía cultivan en la selva . La base de su fue el maíz que les sirvió para hacer bebidas , como el atole , usando su pasta . Otros alimentos importantes fueron los derivados del cacao , de su semilla obtenían una pasta para elaborar una bebida , ( xocolati o chocolate ) . Además cultivaban frijoles , chile , calabazas , batatas , vainilla y yuca .
Construyeron enormes edificios de y pirámides con altares para sacrificios en sus cimas . También hicieron estelas , unos monumentos fabricados con bloques de piedra rectangulares enterrados en el suelo , con grabados que recordaban hechos importantes y representaban sus creencias religiosas . Inventaron además un sistema de escritura aún no descifrado completamente . Con trozo de la corteza de algunos árboles fabricaban largas tiras de papel , llamadas códices . En ellos relataban hechos importantes y representaban sus creencias .
Su estuvo formada por un conjunto de ciudades que funcionaban como estados . Cada ciudad - estado fue gobernada por un jefe mayor el , ( " hombre verdadero " ) . Los principales puestos estaban guardados para su familia , o para la nobleza y se heredaban de padres a hijos mayores .
