In an ideal voltmeter, resistance is infinite, so it draws no current from the circuit.

In an ideal ammeter, resistance is zero, so it does not affect circuit current.

If you connect a voltmeter across the whole circuit, it will measure the total current.

An ammeter is best placed in parallel with the load to get accurate current readings.

You can measure the total current by placing the ammeter anywhere in the main supply line, as long as it's in series.
