A generic noun refers to a whole group , , or category of people , places , things , or ideas rather than one specific instance . For example , saying " Dogs are loyal " uses " dogs " as a noun for all dogs , while " My dog is loyal " points to a pet .
You can make a noun generic in English using three main patterns :
1 ) Plural nouns ( No article ) : Use the plural form to speak broadly about a group . Example : " are useful . "
2 ) Singular count nouns ( With " a " or " " ) : Use an indefinite article to represent any random member of a category . Example : " A doctor helps people . "
3 ) Singular count nouns ( With " " ) : Use the definite article to talk formally about a whole species , , or musical instrument . Example : " The whale is huge . " or " She plays the piano . "
