In 1900 , a group of were travelling across the Gobi Desert in China . The desert was , dry and difficult to cross . During the day , the temperature could become extremely hot , while at night it could fall below freezing . The explorers were searching for places that had been forgotten for hundreds of years .

One morning , a young guide named Tashi noticed something strange . A small piece of wood was sticking out of the sand . At first , the explorers thought it was just a broken piece of an old cart . However , Tashi was . He carefully moved some of the sand with his hands and something much more interesting .

Underneath the sand was a wooden door .

The explorers began digging around it . Soon , they found the of an ancient building . There were pieces of pottery , wooden boxes and even old paintings . It seemed that an entire had once existed there .

But why had it ?

The explorers continued their investigation and discovered that the settlement had been built beside an ancient river . Hundreds of years earlier , the river had changed its . Without water , the people could no longer grow food or keep their animals alive . Slowly , they their homes and moved somewhere else .

Over time , the wind carried sand across the empty buildings until the entire settlement was .

The discovery was important because the objects left behind could tell historians about how people lived of years ago . A simple piece of wood sticking out of the sand had led the explorers to a forgotten city .

Tashi had not been looking for a city that morning . He had simply noticed something that other people might have ignored .

Sometimes , the smallest clue can lead to the biggest .
