Por ejemplo , 4 , 2 × 10^3 representa 4200 y 9 , 1 × 10^ - 4 equivale a 0 , 00091 . Este enfoque permite comparar magnitudes sin preocuparse por ceros . Al manipular expresiones algebraicas , la base puede ser positiva o negativa , y el exponente indica cuántas veces se multiplica la base por diez .
