MATTER AND ITS PROPERTIES

Everything around us is made up of matter: books, tables, pencils, food; you and me, we are matter.

3

PROPERTIES OF MATTER

Matter has general properties such as:

  • Mass. The amount of matter that is in an object. We use a scale to measure mass.
  • Volume is the space that an object occupies. We use a measuring flask to measure volume of a liquid.

5

STATES OF MATTER

Matter has got three different states:

  • Solids have got a fixed shape and volume.
  • Liquids haven't got a definite shape but have got a fixed volume. They can flow and change their shape depending on the container they are in.
  • Gases haven't got fixed shape or volume. They tend to expand to occupy all available space.

6

TYPES OF MATTER

MATTER CAN BE EITHER A PURE SUBSTANCE OR A MIXTURE.

  • PURE SUBSTANCES are made up of only one kind of matter.
  • MIXTURES are made up of two or more pure substances.
