Learning Objectives

Throughout the use of multiple media the student should:

-Listen to a variety of popular songs to connect the music genre with poetry and its devices positively.

-After reading and listening to the information shown in the presentation regarding the definitions of figurative language devices the student should match the terms with the examples provided correctly. 

-Watch a video of different popular songs to engage student’s attention into recognizing figurative language satisfactorily. 

-Identify figurative language devices in the lyrics of the song “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy accurately.

-Classify each literary device found in the lyrics as simile, hyperbole, metaphor, personification and symbol with 70% accuracy.

Learning Activities

On this learning object, the student should gain comprehension of figurative language devices in popular songs to motivate the learner to appreciate poetry.

Following Gagne curricular design process the LO has been constructed so the student is introduced to a topic using multimedia resources to increase attention and concentration (Archavskyi, 2014).

I. Introduction to Figurative Language through the use of pictures, text and audio.

II. Examples of song lyrics are included using a video from YouTube.

III. The video with lyrics of the song “Centuries” will be available for the student to watch and listen.

IV. An assessment strategy will be available for the student to test their knowledge of the material studied.

Figurative Language Definition

Figurative Language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. 

Hyperbole is a type of figurative language that depends on intentional overstatement (exaggeration). 

Metaphor is a relationship comparing two unlike objects.  A metaphor is a direct comparison, naming something as something else. 

Simile is a figure of speech in which two things are compared using the word "like" or "as.” 

Personification gives human qualities and characteristics to non-living things.
