Britain is the country of contrasts - there is a great contrast between highland and lowland Britain .
The rocks in the north and west of Great Britain are ( hard ) and ( old ) than those in the south and east . These ( old ) rocks are covered by moorland , such as the Lake District , the Pennines in England and much of Scotland and Wales . The soils there are poor , thin and stony . In addition these areas are ( wet ) and ( hard ) to reach than the ( low ) land in the south and east .
The south and east are rarely flat , but instead of mountains covered by moorland , there are hills which alternate ( ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ) with areas of lowland . The soils are generally ( deep ) and ( rich ) , and the climate is ( dry ) and ( good ) for farming . Industry benefits from ( easy ) communication .
These differences affect people's lives .
