Some of the world's most famous cities are in the United States of America . Cities like New York , Washington D . C . , Miami and are familiar names to everyone .
New York City is in the state of New York and it's the biggest city in the USA . It has a of over eight million people !
The city has five boroughs : Queens , Brooklyn , The Bronx , Staten Island and Manhattan . Manhattan is one of the most famous boroughs , you often see it in films and many popular tourist attractions are here . There's the Empire State Building , Times Square and Wall Street ? the centre for banks and businesses .
New York is also one of America's cities . In 1626 the Dutch bought the island from the Native Americans and called it New Amsterdam , but in 1664 the English changed its name to New York .
In the 19th and 20th centuries lots of immigrants came to New York from and . Today there are big and Italian communities in the city . A lot of
Chinese people live here in Chinatown , and many Italians live here in Little Italy .
Just south of New York is Washington D . C . ? the city of the United States of America . It became the capital of the United States in 1790 . George , the first president of the USA , gave his name to the city . It's still the centre of government today and some of the most important buildings in the country are here .
This is the White House , home of the president of the United States . And this is the Capitol Building . It's the meeting place of the United States Congress . Washington is a very city . There are lots of interesting things to see here like the Washington Monument , the Supreme Court and the Lincoln Memorial .
About 1700 kilometres south of Washington is Miami . Miami is in on the south - east coast of the country . It's very different to both New York and Washington . A lot of people say Miami is more like a Latin American cityand it's easy to see why . Over half the population of Miami was born outside of the USA , and most people here speak as their first language . It's got a warm climate , too , so it's very popular with . People come here for its beautiful beaches and vibrant social life .
Another famous American city is Chicago . It's over 2000 kilometres north - west of Miami ? and it doesn't have a very warm climate , because strong blow in from the prairies . In fact , people call Chicago the ? Windy City' ! But Chicago is also very popular with tourists . They come here to see Lake Michigan and visit some of the city's famous sights like the Willis Tower and the Millennium Park .
