The Roman ended in 27 BCE when Caesar's grandnephew Octavian became and absolute leader of the Roman Empire . Upon becoming emperor , he took on a new name , , which means " revered one " ( one ) .

The people were no longer able to in the government . There was no longer a of power , where government bodies " checked " one another . The government was no longer a tripartite , or part , government . They were now ruled by person , an emperor , who had power or total control .

However , Augustus was not a bad emperor . His , or ruling , began a 200 year period of peace and , known as the Romana , or " Roman Peace " .
