El esmalte heráldico designa el atributo cromático de un campo o de un fondo. Se trata de colores simbólicos: así el gules se representa por un rojo sea bermellón, escarlata, carmín u otro. Los colores están repartidos en tres grupos:

Los colores, compuestos esencialmente del azur, del gules, del sable, del sinople y del púrpura;
Los metales, compuestos esencialmente del oro y el plata;
Los forros, compuestos esencialmente del armiño y del vero, así como de sus innumerables variantes; son de hecho composiciones "bicromáticas", reuniendo un esmalte con un metal.
