Rejeté par la noblesse je suis élu comme député aux États généraux de 1789, par le tiers état d' Aix-en-Provence.

Des indices

Très grand orateur, je défends la position rebelle du Tiers État contre les manœuvres d'intimidation du roi en juin 1789.

Je participe à la rédaction de la déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen...

et demande que les biens de l'Église catholique soient mis « à la disposition de la Nation » afin de fournir des moyens financiers à l'État royal qui est en faillite.

Ambitieux je rêve de devenir ministre mais l'Assemblée constituante interdit aux députés de le devenir.

Je me rapproche alors du roi Louis XVI, dont je deviens un conseiller secret, bien payé mais peu écouté.

J'entretiens une correspondance secrète avec le roi et lui conseille d'accepter la monarchie constitutionnelle.

Je meurs brusquement en avril 1791 alors que je viens d'être élu président de l'Assemblée constituante. Mes funérailles donnent lieu à un immense triomphe populaire.
