Murasaki Shikibu wrote the Tale of Genji, which is known as the world’s first novel. 

At this time, women were not taught how to write.

1199 - 1267 Tunisia

Alcha al-Manubyyia was known for her study of her religion and her kindness towards others.  

She refused to marry which was very unusual at the time. 

Her work was recognised within her own religious group when she was given an important title.

1581- 1663 Angola

Queen Njinga Mbandi fought for freedom of her kingdoms in Angola against the Portuguese. 

She was known for being very wise and intelligent.

Nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz  wrote poetry about women’s rights and religion. 

She supported women’s education and was punished by her church for speaking about equal rights for men and women.

Sent as a slave from Ghana to Jamaica, Queen Nanny became a warrior and leader of a group of runaway slaves.  


During her lifetime she set hundreds of slaves free.
