Estudios recientes de imagen cerebral funcional y metabólica, así como, análisis de casos neurológicos en pacientes
músicos y no músicos han comenzado a descifrar la localización, procesamiento y creación de la música. Los músicos la
perciben de manera distinta al resto de la población, debido a que la procesan con el hemisferio izquierdo y poseen
asimetrías cerebrales especialmente en áreas motoras y auditivas primarias, y algunos desarrollan oído absoluto que se
define como la habilidad de repetir o indicar un tono dado sin ninguna referencia previa al estímulo. Nuevas investigaciones
son necesarias para identificar de manera más precisa las redes neuronales y la función cerebral general al escuchar o
crear música.
