Las tuvieron un carácter religioso : aunque no todos los profesores eran eclesiásticos , los universitarios tenían la consideración de clérigos y dependían de Roma . Las principales universidades de ésta época eran Oxford y Cambridge en Inglaterra , París en , Bolonia en Italia y Salamanca en .

Cada universidad tenía propio estatuto , que garantizaba su autonomía . Estaban integradas cuatro facultades : Arte , Derecho , Medicina y Teología . La enseñanza impartía en latín los universitarios vivían en colegios .
