En 1535 , Diego de emprendió una expedición al actual territorio de , que terminó con la pérdida de gran parte de su y sin ninguna de sus expectativas cumplidas .
A pesar de la experiencia de Almagro , Pedro de inició una nueva expedición en 1540 con el objetivo de conquistar efectivamente esas tierras . En su camino fundó ciudades , entre ellas , de la Nueva Extremadura .
El principal problema que tuvo la expedición conquistadora de Valdivia , fue la permanente resistencia del pueblo , la cual tuvo uno de sus momentos más álgidos en de 1541 , cuando dirigió un levantamiento que destruyó Santiago casi por completo .
