like portraying commonplace as abundant descriptive extends yet what comparing devouring enthusiasm digest comparison concepts distinction literal called

" All the world's a stage , and all the men and women merely players . "
Thus wrote William Shakespeare in As You Like It . Of course , he wasn't being ? theworld is not an actual theater stage , nor is everyone an actor a role . Shakespeare was using a metaphor : a literary technique for two dissimilar things .
Metaphors are fairly common in everyday speech , though they are more in writing , especially in poetry . They make writing more and allow writers and poets to present abstract in more direct ways . For example , we can say someone has a " burning passion " for a subject . Their isn't literally on fire , anyone reading this metaphor will understand the person is extremely passionate about this particular topic .
A good example of a common metaphor is thinking of time money . We can spend , save , and waste time . Thinking of ideas as food is equally . We can say a complex idea is hard to , while any idea at all can be described as " food for thought . " The metaphor also to books , with readers good books in a short time . But what if you described a cunning person in this way : " As sly as a fox " ? This isn't a metaphor , but a related technique a simile . The key is that a simile uses " like " or " as " and thus makes the more direct . Shakespeare used a metaphor to say life is a play , but in 1994's Forrest Gump , we hear the simile , " Life is like a box of chocolates . You never know you're gonna get . "
