PAST SIMPLE

We use PAST SIMPLE when we need to narrate the events in chronologycal order.

Example: The moon was amazing last night. It seemed like a shiny giant in the sky. I looked at it and I felt an inspiration to paint that moon.

PAST CONTINUOUS

If we want to express some idea that is happening in the moment we use PAST CONTINUOUS.

Example: He was looking at the space. All planets were moving slowly.

PAST PERFECT SIMPLE

If we want to refer an action that happened in a specific moment in the past, we use PAST PERFECT SIMPLE (had+ past participle)

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

When we need to express some activity that was in progress or repeated, we have to use PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS (had been+ -ing)
