En ocasiones, el apóstol Pedro decía o hacía cosas que luego lamentaba. Por ejemplo, cuando Jesús les contó a sus apóstoles que tendría que sufrir y morir, Pedro lo reprendió diciéndole las palabras del texto de hoy (Mat. 16:21-23). Jesús lo corrigió. Cuando una multitud fue a arrestar a Jesús, Pedro impulsivamente le cortó la oreja a un esclavo del sumo sacerdote (Juan 18:10, 11). Jesús lo volvió a corregir. Además, Pedro había presumido de que, aunque todos los demás apóstoles fallaran y abandonaran a Jesús, él nunca lo haría (Mat. 26:33). Pero ese exceso de confianza se transformó en temor al hombre, y Pedro negó tres veces conocer a su Maestro. Hundido, “salió afuera y lloró amargamente” (Mat. 26:69-75). Seguro que se preguntó si Jesús podría perdonarlo. Sin embargo, Pedro no se dejó vencer por el desánimo.
