El español es una de las lenguas más importantes y más habladas del mundo, sin embargo, su uso no es uniforme en todas partes: existen distintas variedades dialectales del español en España y en América.

En el español peninsular de España puede distinguirse claramente una línea divisoria o isoglosa que divide las variedades del norte, más conservadoras, de las variedades del sur, más innovadoras. Cabe destacar que las variedades innovadoras son las que se trasladaron a Canarias y a América.

Español de América

Lingüísticamente, la fonética americana adaptó muchos rasgos meridionales, especialmente andaluces y canarios. En cuanto al léxico, en el español de América existe un gran número de voces indígenas, muchos arcaísmos, voces procedentes del África negra y voces meridionales y occidentalismos peninsulares.
