Subordinators

Subordinators are words that are used to compare or contrast the ideas in two clauses. They join an independent clause to a dependent clause being compared or contrasted. Examples of subordinators include while, whereas, just as, as, and in the same way that. These words introduce dependent clauses, which are not complete thoughts. The independent clause usually describes the point that is being emphasized or is more important.

Punctuation

Put a comma after a dependent clause that introduces a sentence.

Example: Whereas Eriksen’s proposal deals with stopping garbage from entering the ocean, Boyan Slat proposes cleaning up the garbage already in the ocean.

Do not use a comma when the dependent clause follows the independent clause.

Example: Boyan Slat proposes cleaning up the garbage already in the ocean whereas Eriksen’s proposal deals with stopping garbage from entering the ocean.

Subordinators

Comparison subordinators include: just as, in the same way that, as

Contrast subordinators include: whereas, while

Transitions

Transitions show the connection between two independent clauses (two sentences).

Punctuation

Two independent clauses can be combined in one sentence by using a semicolon between clauses and a comma after the transition:

I love Boyan Slat’s proposal; however, I am worried about its feasibility.

The two independent clauses can also be written as separate sentences. In this case, replace the semicolon with a period, but keep the comma after the transition:

I love Boyan Slat’s proposal. However, I am worried about its feasibility.

Compare and contrast subordinators and transitions are used in compare-and-contrast essays, as well as problem-solution essays where different solutions are being evaluated.

Transitions

Comparison transitions include: similarly, in the same way, likewise.

Contrast transitions include: in contrast, on the other hand, however.
