Read through the slides explaining the functions of important organs. Then to test your knowledge, use the links provided on the last slide.

Heart

  • Pumps blood throughout the body
  • Consists of four chambers (right and left atrium and right and left ventricle)
  • Right atrium: received deoxygenated blood
  • Left atrium: receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
  • Right ventricle: pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
  • Left ventricle: pumps oxygenated blood to the body

Kidneys

  • There are two of them present in a dog
  • Filter waste from the blood
  • Help to regulate blood pressure

Lungs

  • Take in oxygen when a dog breathes in
  • Releases carbon dioxide when a dog breathes out
  • One is smaller than the other to make room for the heart

Liver

  • Produces bile
  • Can fix itself if damage occurs

Stomach

  • Digests the food a dog eats by breaking it down
  • Produces acid to help break down the food
  • Stores food until it is slowly released into the intestines

Intestines

  • Made of two parts (small and large intestine)
  • Small intestine: absorbs nutrients from food
  • Large intestine: absorbs water
  • Produces poop

Spleen

  • Removed damaged blood cells from the blood
  • Stores extra red blood cells
  • Helps fight infections

Pancreas

  • Produces insulin
  • Helps control blood sugar
  • Produces enzymes to help with digestion

Bladder

  • Stores urine until a dog is ready to pee
  • When it is full it tells the brain that it is time to pee

Gallbladder

  • Stores and releases bile
  • Small and pear shaped
  • Works closely with the liver

Esophagus

  • Long tube that connects the mouth and the stomach
  • Does not do any digestion
  • Simply moves the food a dog eats to the stomach

Trachea

  • Also called the windpipe
  • Carries the air a dog breathes in to the lungs
  • Filters air of germs and dust
