Would rather / would prefer

    We often use 'would prefer' and 'would rather' to talk  about preferences.
    For Example: 
    Would you prefer to go for a walk or to go to the cinema?
    Would you rather go shopping with me?

Difference in form

    Followed by a different verb form:
    I would prefer to go to the cinema 
    We can use prefer + ing we it's not preceded by would
    I prefer going to the gym to going to the cinema
    (followed by  'to infinitive')“

    Would you rather stay at a hotel? 
    I'd rather go home
    (followed by the base form of the verb)

Different prepositions

    They use different prepositions:
    would prefer – uses 'to'
    I would  prefer football to basketball  
    would rather – uses 'than'
    I would  rather talk to him in person than send him a whatsapp.
