Today, you will read a short story about a girl named Emma and her day at school. The story includes many examples of the verb “to be”. This verb helps us talk about people, things, places, and feelings.

After reading, you will complete activities to find and use the verb to be in different sentences.

Emma is a student. She is 11 years old and she is in grade 6. Her school is big and colorful. Today is Monday, and it is her favorite day because she has Science and Art.

In the morning, Emma wakes up early. Her mom says, "Good morning, Emma! Here is your breakfast." On the table, there are many healthy things. There is a glass of orange juice, a banana, and a sandwich with lettuce and tomato. "Yum! This breakfast is delicious," Emma says.

At school, Emma sees her best friend, Lucas. He is funny and friendly. His lunchbox is full of fruits. "Wow, there are strawberries, grapes, and a green apple!" says Emma. Lucas says, "Fruits are good for the brain."

In the classroom, the teacher, Ms. Green, teaches about vegetables. "Vegetables are important for your body," she says. She shows pictures of broccoli, carrots, and cucumbers. "Carrots are orange. Broccoli is green. Cucumbers are long and green," explains Ms. Green.

After school, Emma goes to the park with her mom. There, they buy fruit from a small stand. "These strawberries are fresh!" says Emma. She eats some and smiles.

At night, Emma writes in her journal:

"Today is a good day. My friends are kind. My teachers are smart. And fruits and vegetables are amazing!"

  1. 🔍 Find and copy 3 sentences from the story that use “is”.
  2. ✍️ Find and copy 2 sentences from the story that use “are”.
  3. 👁 How many times can you find the word “is” in the story?
  4. 👁 How many times can you find the word “are” in the story?
  5. 🪄 Choose one sentence with “is” and one with “are” from the story. Change the subject and rewrite the sentence.
  6.     Example: “The apple is red.” → “The banana is yellow.”
