A long time ago, there was a prince named Dhola. He was engaged to a girl named Maru, but they had never met. Dhola lived in a big palace with his two friends, Ribia and Sibia. They were sisters, and they both knew how to do magic.

Sometimes, Dhola thought about Maru and wondered what she was like. He really wanted to meet her.

One day, Ribia said, “Dhola, let’s play hide and seek!”

“I don’t feel like playing,” Dhola replied. He looked very sad.

“Why are you so sad?” asked Ribia.

“Let me show you a magic trick!” said Sibia, taking out a magic box. She made something amazing happen, and Dhola smiled. He loved magic, and for a moment, he forgot about Maru.

2

But later, Dhola said, “I want to find Maru.”

“You shouldn’t go!” said the sisters. “You don’t know her. Marrying someone you’ve never met is a bad idea.”

“You might be right,” said Dhola, “but I still want to see her.”

Ribia looked at her sister. “If Dhola meets Maru, he won’t want to play with us anymore.”

“You’re right. We have to stop him,” said Sibia.

One day, a parrot came to the palace. It had a letter tied to its foot. The sisters grabbed the letter and read it out loud:

“Dear Prince Dhola, I’m Maru, your fiancée. Please come and see me.”

“Quick! Hide the letter!” said Ribia. Sibia tore it into pieces and locked the parrot in a cage.

Maru waited for a reply, but the parrot never came back. So she sent another letter with a crow. But again, Ribia and Sibia tore it up and locked the crow too.

Later, Dhola saw some camels that had just returned from Pingal.

“These camels might take Dhola to Maru!” said Sibia.

“Let’s chase them away!” said Ribia. They scared the camels off — all except one old camel.

Dhola walked up to the old camel. “Please, my fiancée Maru lives in Pingal. Can you take me to her?”

“Of course,” said the camel. “But we must not tell Ribia and Sibia. If they find out, they’ll try to stop us.”

Dhola nodded. The camel gave him a plan. “Play dice with them all night until they fall asleep. Then we’ll leave.”

That night, Dhola played dice with Ribia and Sibia until they were fast asleep. At dawn, he climbed onto the camel’s back and rode off toward Pingal.

When Ribia woke up, she shouted, “Where is Dhola?!”

“He’s gone to see Maru!” cried Sibia. “We must stop him!”

They opened the magic box and said, “Abracadabra!” Then they flew off after Dhola.

On the way, Dhola saw a bush full of fruit.

“Let’s stop. I want to pick some,” he said.

“No,” said the camel. “Those weren’t there yesterday. The sisters used magic. It’s a trap.”

They kept going but found the road blocked by thorny branches. Dhola used his sword to cut through. Soon after, they reached a market full of food.

“This looks delicious! Can I just have a bite?” asked Dhola.

“No,” warned the camel. “This market wasn’t here yesterday. It’s more of their magic. If you’re really hungry, ask someone to hand you food — but don’t get down.”

A kind shopkeeper gave Dhola a bag of food, and they moved on quickly.

5

Ribia and Sibia were getting angry.

“Magic isn’t working. We need to catch him ourselves,” said Ribia.

She shouted, “Abracadabra!” and they flew faster.

Finally, they found Dhola near a big river. They grabbed the camel’s tail and started pulling him back.

“Dhola! Cut off my tail!” shouted the camel.

Dhola quickly pulled out his sword and chopped the tail off. Ribia and Sibia fell into the river with the tail and were swept away.

6

The camel cried in pain, and Dhola helped bandage his wound.

“Don’t worry,” said the camel. “Their magic doesn’t work on this side of the river.”

Dhola rested in the grass while the camel ate. Then they continued the journey.

At last, they reached Maru’s house. She was sitting in the courtyard.

“There’s your Maru,” said the camel. “Look how beautiful she is.”

Dhola walked up and said, “I’m Prince Dhola. I’ve come to take you back with me.”

Maru smiled happily. She was so glad to see him.

Her older sister was visiting that day. Maru said, “Dhola is taking me with him.”

“I wonder when we’ll meet again,” said her sister softly.

The two sisters sat on a swing and sang songs — some joyful, some full of longing.

The next day, Dhola and Maru returned to the palace together.
