Introduction to Modal Verbs

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, possibility, permission, or ability. They modify the main verb to convey different meanings.


General structure

Modal + base verb (infinitive without "to")

Common Modal Verbs

Some of the most common modal verbs include:

  • Can - ability or possibility
  • Could - past ability or polite requests
  • May - permission or possibility
  • Must - necessity or strong recommendation
  • Should - advice or suggestion

Important Rules


  • Never add "-s" to a modal verb.


Incorrect: He cans swim.


Correct: He can swim.


  • After the modal, the verb is in the base form (without "to").


Correct: She might go.


Incorrect: She might to go.


  • Modals do not change in the past or future tense (except for some like could, would, or combinations like have to).
