Provenía de Salta, al noroeste argentino. Lideró guerrillas gauchas contra fuerzas realistas. Es conocido por su poncho y su vínculo con los gauchos.

Caudillo del interior, especialmente en La Rioja. Su apodo fue “El Tigre de los Llanos”. Murió asesinado en 1835.

Gobernó Entre Ríos durante la década de 1820. Se destacó por su alianza con Estanislao López (Santa Fe) y juntos enfrentaron al centralismo porteño. Participó activamente en la llamada “Liga Federal” o “Liga de los Pueblos Libres”, que buscaba defender la autonomía provincial y el federalismo frente a las autoridades centrales.

Era dueño de grandes estancias y participaba activamente en la ganadería. En 1829 asumió por primera vez el gobierno de Buenos Aires. Durante su mandato recibió la Suma del Poder Público.

Caudillo y gobernador de Santa Fe durante toda la década de 1820. Participó en la Batalla de Cepeda (1820) contra el Directorio. Aliado de Francisco Ramírez.
