What is Narrative Text?

A narrative text is a type of writing that tells a story.

It typically includes characters, a setting, a plot (events that happen), and a clear beginning, middle, and end.


Social Functions of Narrative Text

•Moral Education: Teach values like honesty, bravery, and kindness.

•Cultural Preservation: Pass down traditions and cultural heritage.

•Entertainment: Capture imagination and provide enjoyment.

•Problem-Solving: Present scenarios where characters overcome challenges, teaching resilience.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

1. Orientation: Introduces the characters and setting. Often includes phrases like "Once upon a time" or "In a faraway land."

2. Complication: Presents a problem or challenge that the characters must face. This adds tension and intrigue to the story.

3. Resolution: The characters find a way to overcome the problem. This part often carries a moral lesson or reveals a change in the characters.

4. Coda: Sometimes included to wrap up the story with a final message or lesson. Often ends with phrases like "And they lived happily ever after."

Key Features of Narrative Text

•Characters: People, animals, or things that take part in the story

(e.g., Lisa, the puppy).

•Setting: Where (place) and when (time) the story takes place

(e.g., a sunny afternoon in a small village).

•Plot: The sequence of events (what happens in the story).

•Conflict/Problem: The main challenge the characters face

(e.g., the puppy is lost).

•Resolution: How the problem is solved

(e.g., Lisa takes the puppy home).

•Theme/Moral: The message or lesson of the story

(e.g., kindness brings happiness).

1.Fairy Tales: Often include magic, royalty, and good vs. evil themes; usually have happy endings.

2.Fables: Short stories with animal characters; teach a moral or lesson.

3.Myths: Explain natural phenomena, customs, or beliefs; often involve gods or supernatural beings.

4.Legends: Stories about heroic people or events from the past; may be based on real people but include fictional elements.

5.Folklore: Stories are passed down from generation to generation and reflect the culture of a particular society.
