What is Scanning and What is it For?

Scanning is a speed-reading technique that involves visually scanning a text to find specific information, such as a date, number, definition, or keyword. This strategy is very useful when a text has already been read and you want to locate certain information without reading everything again.


It is used in many everyday situations, for example, when looking for a phone number in a directory, a TV program in a guide, or sports results in a newspaper. In academic settings, scanning helps to find key information to answer questions, prepare a presentation, review a long document, or study for an exam.


To use this technique effectively, it's important to identify titles, subtitles, and bolded words, as they often highlight key concepts. It's also helpful to look at images or diagrams and use the index or table of contents in longer texts. In digital documents, tools like "Ctrl + F" can help locate information quickly.One of the biggest benefits of scanning is that it saves time and helps you study or work more efficiently. It also promotes more flexible reading, where it’s not necessary to read word for word, but only what is truly needed.
