Functions of Narrative Text

  1. Entertainment – To amuse the audience through storytelling
  2. Moral Instruction – To convey life lessons or values
  3. Imaginative Thinking – To explore ideas or futures that may not exist yet
  4. Cultural Preservation – To share beliefs, customs, and history through stories

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

A. Orientation – Introduces characters, setting (place & time), and background

B. Complication – The main problem or conflict in the story. This sections has problems in the story. It's split into three parts.

  • Rising action: This is when problems start showing up.
  • Climax: This is the most intens part of the problem.
  • Falling action: The tension of the problem starts going down, and we see how it gets solved.

C. Resolution – The solution to the problem or how the conflict is resolved

D. Re-orientation (optional) – A reflection or moral message at the end

Narrative texts come in different types, like:

a. Fictional Stories

These are made-up stories that aren’t about real events or people. They can be novels, short stories, fables, or fairy tales.

b. Autobiographies

These are stories about a person’s own life, written by that person.

c. Biographies

These are stories about someone else’s life, written by someone else.

d. Memoirs

These are stories about a specific time or event in a person’s life, written by that person.

e. Legends

Legends are like folklore. They’re old stories passed down through generations and often explain the origins of a culture or society.

The initial challenge was immense. Skeptics called the project an expensive fantasy. How could they build 50-meter-tall structures that could support thousands of plants, generate their own solar power, and collect rainwater in one of the world's most dense urban centers? The complication wasn't a villain; it was physics, economics, and doubt.

"They see concrete and steel," Kenji told his young team, pointing to the complex schematics. "We must see a living canopy. These aren't just towers; they are ecosystems."

The rising action was a marathon of innovation. Kenji's team faced numerous setbacks. It flickered... then held steady... then began to climb into the green. It worked. The tree was alive.

In the falling action, the rest of the Supertrees were built, and the gardens opened to the world. Kenji watched as visitors walked onto the skyway suspended between two of the giants. He saw their faces—filled not just with tourist excitement, but with genuine awe. They weren't just looking at a clever structure; they were experiencing a new kind of harmony between the built and the natural world.

The Supertrees are now lush, thriving vertical forests, home to over 150,000 plants. At night, they glow with a light and sound show powered by the sun they gathered during the day. The project that was once called a fantasy is now a proven, celebrated reality. It stands as a resolution and a living testament that a friendly, greener, more integrated future is not just something to dream about—it is something that can be built.
