What are like denominators?

Like denominators are fractions that share the same bottom number. For example, 2/8 and 5/8 have the same denominator of 8. With like denominators, we compare by the numerators.

Rule of thumb

Rule of thumb: when denominators are the same, the fraction with the larger numerator is the larger fraction. For example, 4/9 > 3/9 because 4 is bigger than 3.

Example 1

Compare 2/6 and 5/6. Since both have denominator 6, compare numerators: 2 is less than 5, so 2/6 is smaller than 5/6.

Example 2

Compare 7/12 and 7/12. The numerators are the same, so the fractions are equal (7/12 = 7/12).

Common mistakes

Common mistake: mixing up denominators or trying to compare fractions with different denominators. Remember: only compare numerators when denominators are equal.
