1

Introduction to Plant Needs and Parts

Plants grow with energy, water, air, minerals, and space. They are built from a few main parts that work together.

2

What plants need to grow

To grow, plants require sunlight, water, and nutrients from the soil. They also need space and suitable conditions.

3

Light

Light provides energy for photosynthesis. Most plants need some light each day to grow.

4

Water

Water helps transport nutrients and keeps cells firm. Too little or too much can harm a plant.

5

Air and gases

Air around leaves contains carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. Oxygen is released as a by-product.

6

Soil nutrients

Soil provides minerals like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Plants absorb these through their roots to grow strong.

7

Plant parts: Roots

Roots anchor the plant and absorb water and minerals. Some roots store food in certain plants.

8

Plant parts: Stems and leaves

Stems transport water and nutrients from roots to leaves. Leaves capture light and perform photosynthesis.

9

Plant parts: Flowers and seeds

Flowers attract pollinators and develop into seeds or fruits for new plants.

10

Putting it all together

All parts work together: roots take in water and minerals, stems move them, leaves make food, and flowers enable reproduction.
