Introduction

The present simple and present continuous express actions in the present. They have different uses and forms you should learn.

Present Simple: When to Use

Use the present simple for routines, habits, general truths, and repeated actions. It also describes states and facts in the present.

Present Simple: Form (Positive)

For most verbs, add s or es for he, she, or it subjects. Example: She walks to work.

Present Simple: Form (Negative & Question)

Use do/does + not for negatives, and do/does to form questions. Example: Do you play? / He does not like.

Present Continuous: When to Use

The present continuous describes actions happening now or around now, temporary situations, and evolving plans. It emphasizes activity in progress.

Present Continuous: Form

Form with be (am/is/are) + -ing verb. Examples: I am studying, They are watching.

Time Expressions

Present simple uses are often with always, every day, often. Present continuous uses include now, right now, at the moment.

Common Mistakes

Don’t mix tenses: I go (not I am going now). He is playing soccer, not He plays soccer at the moment.

Check time words first, decide if action is routine or in progress, then choose present simple or continuous accordingly.
