Los ácidos nucleicos (ADN y ARN) en los alimentos se digieren principalmente en el intestino delgado gracias a enzimas pancreáticas como ribonucleasa y desoxirribonucleasa, que descomponen el ARN y ADN en fragmentos más pequeños. Luego, nucleasas del intestino delgado descomponen estos fragmentos en bases nitrogenadas y azúcares que el organismo puede absorber para su metabolismo.
