¿Qué es?

La energía de biomasa es una fuente de energía renovable que se obtiene de materia orgánica de origen vegetal o animal, como madera, residuos agrícolas, forestales y urbanos. Esta materia orgánica, que almacena la energía del sol a través de la fotosíntesis, puede ser quemada directamente para generar calor y electricidad, o bien transformada en biocombustibles líquidos o gaseosos.

¿Qué tipos existen?

- Biomasa natural: generada en los ecosistemas sin intervención humana.

- Biomasa residual: restos agrícolas, ganaderos o industriales.

- Cultivos energéticos: plantaciones destinadas exclusivamente a la producción de energía.

Ventajas

- Fuente renovable.

- Reduce la cantidad de residuos.

- Disminuye las emisiones de CO₂ en comparación con los combustibles fósiles.

- Genera empleo rural.

Desventajas

- Puede requerir grandes extensiones de tierra.
